Pierre Hermans : "The European forest is multifunctional by nature"

Although European forests do not face the same challenges as tropical forests do, they are nonetheless affected by degradation phenomena, caused, in particular, by climate change. What roles do European forests play in our lives and what challenges do they face? Why do they need to be restored to ensure their sustainability and multifunctionality ? Pierre Hermans, consultant and specialist in European projects for Reforest'Action, shares his expertise and reminds us that the continuous search for forest balance is what makes his job so interesting.

Reforestation and agroforestry in Ivory Coast : more than 120,000 trees planted in the Agnéby-Tiassa region

Initiated in January 2020, our reforestation and agroforestry project in Ivory Coast is conducted in the field by our technical partner Agro-Map. After the establishment of nurseries and a first planting phase carried out last May, 123,333 additional trees were planted in and around the classified forest of Séguié, between July and September 2020. The objective : to restore 90 hectares of degraded forests and to create agroforestry systems on 400 hectares alongside local cocoa producers.

Guinea : construction of nurseries and new reforestation season

In February 2020 in Guinea, Reforest'Action took part in a technical support mission co-organized by the French Embassy and the EESC, in order to support RENASCEDD in the development of its own nurseries. Eight months later, building on this experience, our technical partner in the field successfully completed the production of thousands of trees in nurseries and conducted their planting alongside local communities.

Ecosystem restoration is essential for the climate and biodiversity

A scientific study published in October 2020 in the Nature journal revealed that restoration of areas damaged by industrial or agricultural exploitation could be far more effective than expected in combating global warming and biodiversity loss. However, ecosystem restoration currently receives only 1% of the funding dedicated to the global climate challenge. This key study was launched in anticipation of 2021, the first year of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration

In Sumatra, local communities get involved in the mangrove restoration

In Sumatra, Indonesia, our mangrove restoration project, initiated in 2017, aims to increase the capacity of this ecosystem to protect coastlines and reduce the risk of natural disasters, as well as to create income-generating activities for local communities. Since last spring, many activities have been carried out on-site by our technical partner. Find out all the news about the project.

In the Alpes de Haute-Provence, the adaptation of forests to climate change requires the inplementation of islands for the future.

In the state-owned forest of Issole (04), 2,650 trees were planted in partnership with the National Forestry Office, thanks to the support of our Reforest'actors and our contributor Enedis. The experimental introduction of various species will help testing their resistance to climate change at a local level.

Forest Revival After a Fire and the Impact of Climate Change

In the past few months, large-scale forest fires have made headlines, particularly in the Amazon and Siberia, as well as more recently in California. Climate change is causing dry spells and heat waves to intensify, resulting in massive fires that devastate both the environment and local populations. We asked our Forestry Project Managers a few questions to better understand what is the best strategy to adopt to promote forest regeneration after such events.
