Peru: socio-economic impacts of a project started 8 years ago

Initiated in 2015, the project developed in the Peruvian region of San Martín, and led in the field by the Urku Centre, is the first project financed by Reforest'Action at the very heart of the Amazon forest. If the early years were focused on the development of agroforestry, this last season is defined by the natural regeneration of a great number of native species, in a continued effort to conserve the Amazon. After 8 years of operation, the impacts of the project on the local communities are significant. Here is an overview of the economic alternatives born from the regenerated forest.

Carbon finance

Carbon finance: a powerful tool in the fight against climate change

Greenhouse gases or GHGs act as a "natural protective shield" that keeps the Earth warm enough to live on. However, the increased concentration of these gases in the atmosphere (+51% of GHG emissions between 1990 and 2020 at the global level) is leading to an excessive climate warming. Since 2005 and the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol, mechanisms have been developed to encourage governments to reduce their carbon emissions. In order to do this, GHGs are gradually being transformed into tradable goods that can be exchanged on markets, just like any other currency, thus giving rise to a new branch of modern finance: carbon finance.

Assisted Natural Regeneration, a complementary solution to tree planting to restore degraded forests

Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) is a complementary solution to tree planting. This solution consists of a soft forest management method that preserves and strengthens existing forests through forest maintenance work that respects and mimics the natural reproduction cycle of trees. This method favors the progressive regeneration of the forest and thus the preservation of biodiversity and the carbon storage function of the soil throughout the process. Within a degraded forest plot that needs to be restored, how is the choice of silvicultural itinerary made between planting, ANR or a combination of these two solutions? In concrete terms, what does ANR work consist of? Why is ANR becoming more and more popular? These are some of the questions that Reforest'Action, an expert in forest restoration around the world, can answer.

AR6 Synthesis Report, IPCC 6th Climate Change Report, 2023 : Key findings, policy options and the role of forests

AR6 Synthesis Report, IPCC 6th Climate Change Report, 2023 : Key findings, policy options and the role of forests

In March 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a synthesis report that concludes eight years of work. It summarises the state of knowledge on climate change and its impacts on human societies and ecosystems. The experts call for a drastic and rapid reduction in greenhouse gas emissions while implementing measures to adapt to climate change. According to the report's authors, several effective and affordable options for action are available - including forest conservation, reforestation, agro-forestry, and certain agricultural practices. However, the experts lament that the financial flows that must be devoted to this are still far from up to the task.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD): compliance requirements for companies (2/2)

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD): compliance requirements for companies (2/2)

Effective January 5, 2023, a new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires new environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosures. Companies must therefore prepare for compliance with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) (see article 1/2). This directive imposes greater transparency on companies, but above all encourages them to embark on a transformation project that profoundly reexamines the companies’ impact on their environment – as well as the impact of the environment on the company.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD): compliance requirements for companies (1/2)

Effective January 5, 2023, a new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires new environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosures. It supersedes the 2017 European NFRD (Non-Financial Reporting Directive), which had introduced the non-financial reporting obligation and whose implementation into French law had led to the non-financial performance declaration (DPEF, by its French acronym) of companies into their annual management report. Companies must consequently prepare to comply with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Sustainability reporting should improve the information quality, reliability and accessibility for stakeholders and suppliers.

 Echerati Peru landscape

In Peru, forest restoration and agroforestery create wealth for villagers

In the province of La Convención, Peru, the project financed by Reforest'Action and carried out in the field by our partner Pachamama Raymi aims to recreate a sustainable social, environmental and economic landscape, favorable to the preservation of biodiversity and the fight against climate change. Around the town of Echarati, located in a valley at an altitude of more than 1100 meters, trees are planted in degraded forest plots and in private agroforestry plots.
